Construction information and updates
On this page you will find information and updates about the breakwater construction works as part of the Ocean Reef Marina project.
What's happening now
Work is underway to finish construction of the two new breakwaters (northern and southern) at Ocean Reef Marina.
The southern breakwater reached its final length of 1.18km in December 2022, and the northern breakwater was completed in May 2022. Click here to see real time progress of the breakwater construction.
The existing breakwater was removed in March 2022, and the rocks retained for use in the new breakwaters.
The majority of on site activity is now focused around the southern area of the site with truck movements reducing significantly following substantial completion of in water works on the southern breakwater.
Connected to the shoreline, the breakwaters extend offshore and will provide calm waters within the marina development.
As safety of the community is paramount, the existing breakwaters are fenced off and no longer accessible for public access or fishing. Access to the current harbour and boat ramp has been maintained.
In September 2022 the Department of Transport revised access to the waters within the marina for safety reasons. The updated notice can be viewed here, but in summary:
- The waters are closed to all vessels within 20m of construction works occurring on the Ocean Reef Marina Southern breakwater.
- All waters of the Ocean Reef Marina are closed to windsurfing, Kitesurfing and winging activities.
- All waters within the silt curtain are closed to all vessels other than vessels associated with construction of the marina and swimming is prohibited.
Over the past few months, a number of trespassers have been witnessed accessing the construction zone, primarily to fish off the existing or new breakwaters. Access to the construction zone is prohibited. WA Police and the City of Joondalup security have been notified, and are conducting regular inspections and working with the project team to ensure exclusion areas are not accessed by anyone unauthorised. Trespassers to the site may be prosecuted.
Breakwater construction commenced in April 2021 and is expected to be complete by mid 2023.
All works will be carried out between the hours of 7am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday. This includes movement of trucks to and from the sites. In the unlikely event that work needs to take place outside of these hours, we will inform the community in advance of these changes.
